In attempts to build up a
larger fan base for their
band and really get the word
out there, the members of
the
Jason Martinko Revue
decided a horror film would
be the best way…
Unfortunately for these
guys, in my opinion, it did
no justice. From
CUT ’N’ RUN Productions
comes;
Gone the
Way of Flesh
Random, not so brutal attacks on
women at shows starring the
J.M.R. are causing a bit
of a stir with the local moms
attic police dept. These are
the only people that appear to
be concerned with the killings.
I guess I probably wouldn’t be
to worried either, considering
I’m of the opposite sex and do
not particularly enjoy the
sounds and style of the music
the band plays.
As a fan of extreme underground films and a huge fan of
Troma (which may be
putting this film to mass
production) I do have to say I
was highly disappointed in this
film. I am writing this review
in complete respect to the guys,
specifically for the reasons
they decided to make it, most
just talk about making a film,
they got up, out and did it.
While watching the film I
immediately said to myself that
it looked like it was made more
for promotion of the band rather
than for true film making
purposes as well as for true
horror fans. In the special
features portion of the disc you
will find the guys discussing
the fact that they did it to
promote their band.
With all the bands favorite things (when it comes to
film and life) in there own
random places throughout the
film, they pieced the stuff
together, put it to disc and
began promoting. They would
like to think that this film is
filled with filth, gore, and all
things extreme… But they are
terrifyingly wrong.
I would have liked to say yes, this film does compare to the old H.G.
Lewis films; well sorry, I
cant. Also this in no way
compares to even the worst of
old grind house cinema. Of
course the guys who made the
film and people interviewed on
the disc such as Art Ettinger
(of Ultra Violent Magazine) and
Fred Vogel (of Toe Tag
Pictures), were all way too kind
when talking about ‘Gone The Way
Of Flesh‘. I have, in my life
time, bore witness to hundreds
upon hundreds of films that
would give a migraine to even
the worst film lover, this is
one of those films. After 10
minutes I wanted to eject the
film and bury it under the rest
of my collection.
My friends, I am not
bashing the fact that they made
the film. For this fact I give
tremendous merit and I have
taken into account that they had
never done anything of the type
and it probably will bring more
publicity to the band itself. I
do hope they get what they
wanted by releasing this, and
yes I look forward to seeing the
sequel which is supposedly being
put together with guest
appearances by Lloyd Kauffman
and Ron Jeremy.
My problem overall is the fact that these guys are fans of the genre
and know what it would take to
make something semi decent but
used none of the knowledge they
have and just did a throw
together film. Even on a $700
budget and being over the course
of three years many directors
have succeeded in releasing top
notch underground, extreme
independent works. I do hope
the sequel, if ever released,
does more for the industry than
this film did. But personally I
think they should focus on their
music.
Gentlemen, this is a music
video, not a film. Stick to
what you are truly good at
doing, that is unless your next
venture into the world of
celluloid is truly a works worth
seeing.
I would also like to mention that aside from random concert footage, a
small amount of drug use and
some worthless, gore less and
filth less killings, this movie
has no real plot for me to
discuss or any kind of story
line in general. I do believe
they have it in them and the
real story is in the back of
their brains. When that comes
forward, place that on a platter
and send it my way, just leave
band promotions out next time.

Ratings:
For Story line I give this film
a 1. Plain and simple folks…
there is none, just randomness
strewn out on the floor and
pieced together into film
footage. That’s all. I’m sorry
I can say no more.
For Cinematography I give a 3. I love me some hand held filming, so
more credit is given here. If
only the entire film was shot
with the original DV camera they
had and kept that graininess I
would have enjoyed the look
quite a bit more. All in all to
clean for what was trying to be
pulled off with this film.
For score I give a 5.
Being mostly the band who
created the film it was pretty
o.k. Though I didn’t
particularly like the mediocre
sound the Jason Martinko Revue,
I can appreciate them using
there own tunes, but like I said
the film is more of a music
video than a film.
For Gore I give a 0. It was flat out horrendous and in no way in
tradition of anything I have
ever sat back and viewed
before. Even good old H.G.
Lewis gets a 10 compared to the
gore in this film.
Oh I forgot to mention the
acting, for that I give a 1. I
have rarely seen worse… that’s a
lie, I have seen worse and at
the very least, just as bad.
Still my opinion stands.
As for the film as a whole, dig a hole and hide it from human eyes, I
give this film a 2. Nice try
guys but no win. I wish I had
more hands so I could give more
thumbs down. Was this a comedy,
a music video, a “horror movie”
or a naked chick flick? If it’s
all that combined, that’s all
fine and well, but please tell
me what I just watched. All I
can get out of it was nothing,
not even filth, just junk. Like
I said earlier, you like the
good stuff so use your knowledge
of and what you’ve learned, and
gimme something worth my time.
